HOW I STARTED “This Should BE Fun”
My youngest son Aquila was diagnosed with stage two autism in November 2024. He communicates in various ways, but speaking is not one of them. This was not my first experience working with people whose way of communicating was different than mine.
Before writing songs for royalty, twenty years ago I was living in Ghana, West Africa working with people of all ages to create songs in West African dialects and musical styles. I was able to use this songwriting experience later in Southern California when I volunteered with at risk youth through the nonprofit Awaken Arts.
Around that same time I was working with a stroke survivor, who hadn't had much luck in her language skills after coming out of a month long coma. She came to me as her vocal coach to use music as a way for her learn to speak again. Most of her language capabilities was taken out when she had a brain hemorrhage. Since music and songwriting light up all different parts of the brain, she was able to have significant progress using music to develop her ability to once again have conversations. We wrote songs for her each week that would help her gain the words to speak in everyday life.
